Left Over Bubble & Squeak

If you’re anything like us, you’re always on the lookout for new recipes to repurpose leftovers. You won’t want to miss out on this versatile, easy, and tasty British recipe called Bubble & Squeak! Keep reading until the end of the article to learn all about this dish and how you can prepare it at home.

What Is Bubble & Squeak?

This dish’s unique, onomatopoeic name comes from the sound the vegetables make when they release water in the pan!

Bubble & Squeak Ingredients

Here are the essential, traditional ingredients you will need to make Bubble & Squeak. Don’t be afraid to make substitutions, as this recipe is all about using what you have available to you!

  • 2 cups leftover mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup leftover roasted vegetables (like cabbage, brussels sprouts, kale, carrots, or broccoli)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoons butter or oil

Traditionally, Bubble & Squeak is prepared vegetarian. If you would like, you may add leftover roast, bacon, ham, or another type of meat to increase the heartiness of the dish!

Bubble & Squeak Recipe

Here are simple, easy-to-follow instructions for how to prepare Bubble & Squeak!

  1. Heat butter or oil over medium heat in a large pan.
  2. Add onion to fat and cook until soft, translucent, and pungent. This will take around 5 minutes, depending on your heat and equipment.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the mashed potatoes and vegetables to the pan.
  4. Fry all the ingredients for at least 10 minutes, stirring regularly to ensure nothing sticks to the pan.
  5. When the vegetables have released all of their moisture and are browned nicely, use a spatula to press the mixture into the pan so that it holds together.
  6. Serve (if desired) with a poached or fried egg, leftover meat, or by itself!
