What Is Damascus Steel?

Damascus steel is also a type of alloy. It includes more than one layer of steel and is easily distinguishable due to the wavy patterns etched into the steel. 

In the past, genuine Damascus steel was made with a metal called Wootz steel from India, while modern Damascus steel is typically an alloy of two steel: high carbon content steel and softer stainless steel for flexibility.

Damascus steel is characterized by:

  • Wavy patterns etched into the blade
  • A hardness range of 52–60 on the Rockwell scale
  • Easily maintained due to corrosion resistance
  • Durability that will last for years (and maybe decades) to come

What Is Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel, a metal alloy, is made of carbon, chromium, and iron. The blade is rarely affected by deterioration and has better edge retention, thanks to chromium. Although chromium makes the steel corrosion-resistant, not all stainless steel knives are created equally.

A standard stainless steel blade has roughly 10% chromium, while a blade of better quality will have around 13% chromium.

So, Which Is Best?

Typically, stainless steel knives are easier to maintain and more durable than Damascus knives. If you drop a stainless steel knife, it won’t chip or break, and the blades don’t require as much upkeep as Damascus knives.

However, Damascus steel knives are much stronger than stainless steel ones and maintain their sharp edge for lengthier periods. However, these blades require tons more maintenance and are susceptible to rust if not correctly cared for.

So, which is best – Damascus steel or stainless steel? Both types of knives are high quality and will serve you well, but stainless steel knives are the way to go if you want a durable, versatile, low-maintenance blade.
